Leptospirosis - protect your pet and your family!

Does your dog walk in or drink from ponds or puddles?
Does your dog go outside where he/she could be exposed to wildlife?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY OF THE ABOVE, YOUR DOG MAY BE AT RISK FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that typically attacks the liver and kidneys, potentially resulting in organ damage and failure. Wild and domestic animals such as raccoons, skunks, dogs, and rats can act as carriers for the disease. An increased number of cases of Leptospirosis are being diagnosed in Canada, likely due to the growing number of raccoons that inhabit our urban and suburban settings.
Most cases result from contact with contaminated urine in water, therefore if your dog drinks from a contaminated pond, or has a cut on its foot and walks through a contaminated puddle of water, your dog could become infected. Infected dogs can also infect people! Leptospirosis can pose a serious health risk for both you and your canine friend. Leptospirosis vaccines are designed to protect your dog from this infection, however protection only lasts one year!

There are vaccines available that provide protection against four strains of Leptospirosis. To ensure effectiveness these vaccines must be administered annually!
